Q: I’m a female and am trying to tone up. What type of workout should I do??
ANSWER:Glad you asked! One of the biggest mistakes many females make who want to ‘tone’ and add more muscle definition is going to the gym and performing cardio workout after cardio workout.
While this may burn calories and help you shed some fat, it’s doing nothing to really tone and define those muscles of yours.
Add Strength Training
Instead, add some resistance training. While training with weights tends to be the best option, you can certainly also train with some resistance bands or even do some bodyweight exercises if you prefer.
The main thing that you’ll want to be sure you’re doing is getting your muscles working against some form of resistance as this is going to increase their strength level and add those feminine curves to your body.
Also, what’s perfect about these activities is that they tend to boost your metabolism more than those cardio workouts will, therefore you’ll actually burn off more body fat later on in the day, helping you get leaner as well.
Use Compound Exercises
If you want to tone up, resistance training is the way to go. Focus on exercises that work all the major muscle groups, preferably working two or more at once such as squats, lunges, step-ups, push-ups, chest presses, shoulder presses, bent over rows, pull-ups (if you can do them), and the plank movement.
If you can do these two to three times a week, it shouldn’t be long before you’re sporting a brand new body.
